A forestry workhorse that is a helpful now as it was 20 years ago.  Foresters call them hipchains or string boxes.  This is the more common smaller version that runs a 1500 meter spool of cotton thread.  Just tie the thread to a branch,  reset the counter to zero, start walking and when you stop check the counter to see the distance in meters.
