Its success as been proved beyond a doubt. Engine and machine parts of any metal, automobile castings and the like are as strong as any part of like dimensions when welded. A brief description of all principal kinds of welding is given, including fire welding, welding by water gas, thermal welding, brazing and blowpipe welding. The advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed. Manufacturers, contractors, machine shops, garages, blacksmiths, boiler makers, repair shops, foundries, steel mills and railroad shops are rapidly adding the oxy-acetylene process to their equipment. In cutting beams, girders, steel sheeting, heavy piston rods, steel plates, gates from steel castings, wrecking steel building frames or bridges, the work can be done much cheaper and in less time than by the old methods. In the preparation of this book the author has endeavored to cover every practical point in the process of welding and cutting and the removal of carbon with oxygen. Enough of the theory has been included to enable the practical man to acquire a thorough understanding of the subject. Reference to the table of contents on the following pages will show the scope of the book. Numerous illustrations of distinct advantage to the operator have been included. Review: This nice and well illustrated tome does a great job of covering the basics of Oxy-acetylene cutting and welding. The nice illustrations and very clear descriptions do a good job or making the "how-to" very clear. Good descriptions of all of the processes involved in working metal with torch and heat are given. This goes well beyond simple melting and joining metals with a weld to include metal properties, heat treating, annealing, tempering, brazing, and other necessary working processes and techniques. Now while this was written in an era when most acetylene was generated on site with carbide units producing the gas "on demand", with the exception of substituting gas tanks for gas generators, everything else remains, in majority, the same. In fact, these older tomes took the time to explain a bit more of the base knowledge that can make one truly competent, without trying to impress us with higher mathematics and engineering than the new books due, which seem to either be trying to just give us a bare bones "do this" or a "wow- aren't you impressed that the author is so smart" kind of approach. Me, I just want to get the knowledge i need at something to be actually competent, without all the fluff, but a bit more than the trivial bare bones that would leave me at risk of mistakes or dangerous choices. This book can be used as a reference, or it is a great base instruction manual for gas welding and cutting.
