This CD contains high resolution digital scanned images of a rare book from the Victorian Era.   Mezzotint engraving on metal: what it is and how it is done. How prints are made from mezzotint plates and how to keep them when they are made. Inks, paper, and colored prints.  Mezzotints are both the predecessor of modern engraving techniques and skills and the same time the height of the engravers art. Printmaking process of the intaglio family. It was the first tonal method to be used, enabling half-tones to be produced without using line or dot based techniques like hatching, cross-hatching or stipple. Mezzotint achieves tonality by roughening the plate with thousands of little dots made by a metal tool with small teeth. In printing the tiny pits in the plate hold the ink when the face of the plate is wiped clean. A high level of quality and richness in the print can be achieved. The process was especially widely used in England from the mid-eighteenth century, to reproduce portraits and other paintings. Since the mid-nineteenth century it has been relatively little used. Robert Kipniss and Peter Ilsted are two notable 20th century exponents of the technique; M. C. Escher also used mezzotint from time to time.   Below are some images from this CD .< p=""> 282 pages on the technique, history and engravers, with 41 important mezzotint works, including an impressive portrait of Queen Victoria. The file is in a PDF file format, with sufficient resolution to zoom in to about 500% to examine fine details of the mezzotint prints.  Imagine engraving of such fine line and patterning that the result is functionally indistinguishable from a photograph or fine art drawing and water color of an individual or scene. Here in this publication you will find examples of mezzotint engraving so fine that you will find yourself wondering that , or if, such fine work is really possible. It pushes the limits of credulity to believe that engravers of such skill and patience and artistic ability ever existed, but the evidence is clear, and in front of us in this tome. Undeniable.  So what is the secret?  Here we learn of the craftsmen who made and evolved this engraving and printing technique set, and not only of their history, but of their tools, techniques, methods, and tradecraft … skills we can still apply not only to mezzotint today, but to any engraving process.  Seeing hundreds of old and ancient publications of widely varying quality, (often very crude and poor) … this publication knocked my socks off …  Since I can not even coordinate well enough to juggle in the simplest ways, and my drawing skills make me look like I am 3 years old drawing stick figure people, I can claim no personal skills … but as an experienced graphics person, doing graphics and printing and scientific and nature photography for decades, I can testify that this is impressive resolution, graphics, art, and skill …  Whether you are seeking great old graphics images for use in scrap-booking, historical collages, interested in the history of technology, or an beginning or experienced engraver or graphics person, this is a worthwhile book / tome to read and re-read.  I read it thru several times, and learned something new each pass.  The mezzotint process produces amazing results … now if only I could draw …  Don’t miss this one of you are into engraving or graphics arts.     CD is Windows and MAC compatible.
