VTG Webster Webcor Wire Recorder Model 228-01 Chicago 15 Wire Reels/5 LG spools   DESCRIPTION Once again I have been blessed and have found several items that I want to place in my store.  I seem to find a little of everything sooner or later, definitely like the unusual, especially in antique and vintage items. After selling antiques for over 25 years I am still always surprised at what I find that I have not seen before.  Hopefully you will like the items that I have found and will come back to visit my store again, looking for the unusual.  This sale is for a Vintage Webster Chicago Model 228 Wire Reel Recorder, with lots of extra pieces included.  Definitely early Industrial, my research indicates that these were first produced In 1945, by Webster-Chicago and sold to the U.S. Navy.  The stainless steel, but very thin, wires were designed for extremely cold and fluctuating weather.  Webster then created Wire Recorders for business and industrial customers.  It was indicated that Webster started selling a new line of tape recorders in 1952, and discontinued making wire recorders in the early 1950's.   A great website with a large amount of Webster history is  radiomuseum "dot" org/dsp_hersteller_detail.cfm?company_id=754.  These are Definitely early Industrial, definitely a Mid Century Machine. The Wire Reel Recorder still has the original small wire spool and a larger spool that the wires wraps onto, and a very heavy duty electrical cord, see picts.  I was afraid to remove the spools on the machine, and so I am selling it exactly as I bought it, see picts.    Because it was used in an Industrial setting it has collected a few duplicate pieces.  Included with the Wire Reel Recorder are: *  14 Recording Wire Reels/Spools (15 counting the one on the machine),   Most of these spools are stll in boxes, 7 Webster-Chicagomarked  boxes and 1 in a GC Master-Tone marked box.  I found a bag full of other spools that had 6 of the 14 in the bag.  One of the spools does not have wire on it, and the ones in the bag show more wear.   I cannot confirm the spools in boxes, are in their original boxes, or that there is anything recorded on them, see picts.  *  There are 4 of the larger metal reels(5 counting the 1 on the machine), Three(3) of the extra metal reels have lots of wire wrapped on these, the one on the machine has some wire on it, and one is empty, see picts.  *  There is a Webster-Chicago Microphone still in it's original box, looks hardly used, see picts.  *  There is an envelop marked, "Electrod Tele-Prickup Pat. Pend.".  I am not sure what this piece looks like, or if it is one of the pieces included, but am sure collectors will know if they see it in a picture.   *  Hard Wood Carrying Case, see picts.  There is wear to the textured papering on the solid wood case, see picts, but the wood is structurally sound, see picts.   *  There are two plastic covers, both are marked with the Webster-Chicago logo and read "Webster-Chicago Dictation Wire Recorder with Natural Voice Playback", see picts.  *  I have two(2) booklets for a Model 18 Dictation Wire Recorder, not the Model ?? Machine in this sale, see picts.  I had considered selling the booklets separately, but these pieces have been together for over 50 years, and am sure a collector will appreciate them also.    The  booklets include an Accessories brochure, and a booklet marked "Instructions for Operating Webster-Chicago model 18 Dictation Wire Recorder", see picts.  These booklets show significant wear and bends but great vintage paper brochures, see picts.  *  There are also a couple repair tickets, but since there were extra pieces that would not have originally belonged to this machine, cannot guarantee that the repair tickets are for this machine, see picts.  When I showed it to my husband he said he had seen one before.   I could not believe it when he told me that this thin little piece of wire would store a recording, see picts.    He plugged it in and we were able to hear the current spool on the machine.  It worked, all the switches appear to work, but is being sold as needing cleaned/restored.  I am selling it as I purchased it, was afraid to clean/damage it.  The wire recording sounds like a deposition, but I can't be sure.  The man being taped talks about something from 1941, and references this as being 15-16 years ago.   Based on this information I estimate this machine was still in use during 1956-57, Very Vintage Tube Machine, late Steampunk era, and a must have for the collector of early Industrial Machine.   I am not an electrician and can only describe what I saw/heard when plugged in.   The electrical cord and plug look original to the Recorder, significant damage to the cord, cuts in a couple places, so will need repaired/rewired.  It should be inspected by someone much more knowledgeable then I, to insure it is up to current electrical codes.  This Webster-Chicago Recorder, out of the box is approx. 11 1/2 inches across, 11 1/2 inches deep, and approx. 5 1/2 inches tall.    For being so tiny it is SO very heavy.  The metal has a green-ray finish and what appear to be Bakelite knobs, definitely a great red color, see picts.   The front is marked "Webcor Electronic Memory", all the knobs are marked, with some white surface dirt/rust on the Volume knob, see picts.  The maker's plate on the back of the machine is marked "RMA 375 Webster-Chicago Chicago 89 Ill U.S.A. Licensed under Armour Patents, Model 228 1 use only on alternating currents at 105-120 volts 60 cycles 70 Watts", see picts. When I was taking it out to measure it, it tipped, and I hate to say I may have hurt the wire on the machine.  I wrapped it back around the large spool, and repositioned it on the machine.  This machine is a piece of recording history, and who knows what else you might hear on all those 'wire' spools, see picts.  The machine is clean, with minimal surface dirt and scratching, well protected by the box, which does show wear to the outside of the box, see picts.    The box measures approx. approx. 12inches across, 17 inches deep, and approx. 7 inches tall.    This Webster Webcor Recorder is guaranteed to be antique and original, and was just purchased at a local Garage  Sale.   I am sure in the pictures you can see the great look this Industrial Steampunk Retro Recording Machine will display, in your collection, or as a conversation piece, or just to capture some voices, living history, from long ago.    Please ask any questions before purchasing this item. This item will weigh approx. 48 pounds packed to ship.   The Recorder, by itself, is almost 40 pounds. I am told that my descriptions are too wordy, and that I describe minimal damage that should be expected in vintage/antique items. They are probably right, as this is an old item and shows it's age.
