The otoscope is packaged in the original pouch (Welch Allyn does not seal the otoscope pouch) and the ophthalmoscope is sealed in the manufacturer's pouch (your assurance that the items are indeed new). The batteries in these sets have a 2016 expiration date. We have upgraded the hard case in this set from a 05259 to a 05259-M case-- the 05259-M case will accommodate the newer-style MacroView otoscope (23810/23820/23920) in the event that you decide to upgrade your set to the MacroView otoscope in the future. As an added courtesy to the buyer, we have "pre-conditioned" the new battery in this set to ensure optimum performance. Pre-conditioning consists of charging the new battery for 16 hours and then completely discharging the battery (about an hour minimum); charging the battery a second time for 16 hours and totally discharging for a second time, and charging the battery a third time for 16 hours.
