Here is my NEMA 14-30 clothes dryer plug to common 3 prong receptacle adaptor. This adaptor uses both lines that your hot is hot and your white wire is also hot and green is ground. This adaptor makes it so you can use a common 120 volt 3 prong extension cord to move 220 volt power from one place to another. Who wants to pay an electrician hundreds of dollars to run a 220 volt receptacle? Maybe you have a 220 volt air conditioner or welding machine you need to run off 220, if you unplug your clothes dryer and stick my adaptor into the wall now you will have a 220 volt, a 30 amp power source (assuming you have a 4 prong clothes dryer receptacle in your garage or close by). This adaptor is made of 10 gauge cable and is 12 feet long, it puts out 220 volt power. This is a heavy duty cord 30 amp cord. This cord might look like a common 120 volt receptacle but it puts out 220 volt power. Common 120 volt devices will plug into it, so if you plug in a device that can only handle 120 volt power it will burn up, fry, catch fire, explode or best case scenario just quit working. The cord is only intended for indoor use in dry locations. The cord will be marked and tagged indicating that it puts out 220 volt power. Do not remove the tag I put on. Always cut power to the circuit and verify (by trying to turn the machine on) that power is actually off before plugging in or unplugging any 240 volt connection. If you want to plug your welding machine or other device into a clothes dryer outlet, because that's all you have and you flip your 30 amp clothes dryer breaker absolutely under no circumstances should you remove the 30 amp clothes dryer breaker and install a higher amp breaker. The circuit breaker is there to protect the wiring inside the walls. If your machine or appliance is flipping the breaker, that's because the circuit breaker is doing its job and you need to turn the machine down.
