Hollander Beater (valley) For Hand Papermaking; Bronze Tub, Roll And Bedplate

US $2100

Hollander beater (Valley) for hand papermaking. This beater, previously owned by Tim Barrett, is one of the rare bronze tub Valley models, which includes a bronze roll and bedplate. Rust is therefore never a problem. There are just a few nicks near the drain or elsewhere where the paint has been chipped or scraped away revealing the bronze below. This beater is in very good to excellent condition. Roll to bedplate contact is good as evidenced by the carbon paper rub tests done on June 20th, 2021.  (However touch up with carborundum grit after arrival in its new home would be advisable). The bedplate diaphragm was replaced roughly 20 years ago and is still in good condition. Bedplate washout fittings are clear, however, one of the attached hoses has a kink in it and may need to be replaced.  Seller will remove bedplate lever arm extension, motor, and motor mount from the beater, and the beater from its wooden stand. The wooden stand is fitted with casters but with the beater bolted to the stand, the combined unit is top heavy. (The beater with motor weighs an estimated 600 lbs.) The assembly with casters should be used only for very localized movements. The 115V totally enclosed fan-cooled, 1.15 service factor, Dayton farm duty motor has been very lightly used and is in excellent condition.  The motor does not have a wash down (water spray resistant) on/off switch, or a three prong plug installed.  Buyer is therefore responsible for having a professional electrician install both. Likewise a GFI wall plug or other hookup to the main power supply should also be installed by a professional.  Buyer is responsible for pick up in Iowa City, Iowa if possible.  Alternatively, seller will securely band or bolt all components to two pallets for commercial pickup and shipment.  Buyer is responsible for the costs of pickup, shipment, and delivery to buyer's location which the seller estimates will be between $300 and $500 depending on buyer's location, need for lift gate truck, etc. All profit from this sale, after Ebay commission and charges, will go to the match the University of Iowa Center for the Book challenge grant described here:  https://book.grad.uiowa.edu/UICB-2020
