WILLCOX  & GIBBS  type 11-A INDUSTRIAL Lock stitch  High Speed Automatic sewing machine with Metered lubrication and unique   attachments & 8 replacement feet for different sewing operations        The Wilcox & Gibbs Type 11 A High Speed Industrial Lock stitch Rotary thread take up machine incorporates automatic metered lubrication was introduced in1899 with the staggering claim of an output of 4,000 stitches per minute. Steam was the main power in those days and Willcox and Gibbs Co even produced special benches with pulleys for factory operations. The machines outfitted with high foot lift mechanism was the ultimate option for stitching coats, overalls and other articles made out of heavy materials . Serial # L156532* manufactured  by J. R. Brown & Sharp Co of Providence RI and is the true Instrument of precision.  In 1855 after James E.Gibbs have seen a simple illustration of a Grover & Baker machine it triggered the new idea. Then in 1856 after actually witnessing a Singer model # 1 machine in action Gibbs has come to the obvious conclusion that the machine was too heavy, complicated, cumbersome and too expensive. He has decided to create a less-expensive and simple type of sewing machine. James Gibbs and Charles Willcox has obtained a few patents(major one # 17,427 on June 2, 1857) and few other patents for the method of removing the twists in the thread that caused so many missed stitches on the early models and also a patent for noise reduction on the feed. After that they formed “Willcox & Gibbs SMC” and the first commercial chain stitch sewing machine has been patented and produced  by Brown & Sharp Co in 1857 and became a great success immediately ! That Company deserved that at least a few words must be said about it. J.R.Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co. is one of the oldest and probably one of the most significant precision machine tool builders. The firm was founded in 1833 by David Brown and his son Joseph R. Brown. In 1853 the company get Lucian Sharpe as a partner and became J. R. Brown & Sharpe. Early work consisted of making and repairing clocks. B & S Co is credited with many inventions including Standard Wire Gages, the B & S taper, pressure angle gearing, milling cutter, vernier caliper, micrometer and the universal milling machine. All collectors of Antique tools know the name of this company very well. When they have began to be associated with W & G and produce W & G # 64 chain stitch machine they basically transformed all American sewing machines manufacturing and bring all of them to another level , They first began to mass produce truly interchangeable extremely highly precision parts for W & G SMC and only stop doing that in 1948. And they were continue to be the one of leaders of the industry till 2001 when all of the assets of the B&S including the intellectual property, designs, trademarks and  facilities were acquired by Hexagon AB, without the acquisition of B&S. The Brown & Sharpe brand of measurement products became the epitome of super high quality and precision and that is one of the reasons why W &G machines so popular as the collectors item.  This 11-A High speed machine was the truly revolutionary machine for mass production of various garments. The stitch range from 7 to 34(!) per inch. Machine can produce 3500-4000 stitches per minute, No vibration, Noiseless, immediate starting and stopping, floating bobbin case, visible stitch index, rotary take up permitting to use also very light thread and silk ,Spring type feed motion. The rotary hook revolves with speed of more than 12000R.P.M and creates a current of air which blows away all lint and with the regular machine tending to clog the hook system. The actual manufacturing date of this machine could be right after February 26 1937 when Edward H.Kocher filed for Patent for lubrication mechanism. This particular model used Stockton Burton(Providence R.I.) & Otis B.Brush (Bridgeport, CN ) Patent US804301 A  for shuttle mechanism filed on Jan 26 1901 and granted on Nov 14 1905. All those US Patents copies  with drawings will be with the machine . It is indeed the smooth operating and very powerful  machine . About Myself : I am a retired textile engineer and sewing & Knitting machines one way or another has been a part of my job. My background in mechanical engineering combined with some nostalgia, passion and plenty of time on my hands has made the great implication on my current activities – Antique and vintage sewing machine restoration.Over the years I have bought, repaired, serviced and refurbished dozens of machines just for myself and for friends , but now when I am running out of space to store them in accordance with their status, I have decided to begin to offer to you these  marvels  of old engineering at reasonable price . MY PROCESS: In order to retain the authenticity of original time-honored design and  those fine details which  once embellished  the antique sewing machines  I am trying to avoid , unless it is really required due to the extremely neglected original condition,  any repainting of machine metal parts , steel legs and treadles.  Here is the brief description of my process: If  required, I am soaking all moving parts in WD-40 to get rid of that stubborn solidified  whale oil, clean surface with Murphy’s oil soap, high speed polish chrome plated parts and apply a thin coat of a mixture of Boiled linseed oil & turpentine on the originally painted parts and  re-assemble machine.  The gear driven machines are being properly cleaned, greased and oiled, the timing is being checked , bobbin case or shuttle are being taken apart, cleaned and oiled for  smooth thread draw, stitch adjusted to be equal on both sides.  If appropriate for that particular model/class, machine is being tested to sew at slow and fast speeds and in reverse on numerous layers of denim to assure it is sewing with ease.  For machines with motor /light /foot pedal control the following steps are being taken to assure that machine is electrically safe to operate:  the motor, pedal, light wires, are inspected for electrical safety and replaced (if necessary) from the coils to the connector.  The foot pedals are being cleaned and adjusted for smooth speed control.   The machines I offer for sale are electrically safe and fully guaranteed to sew very well.
