By enabling only an outward flow, the diode prevents batteries from discharging into the panel. It also serves to keep out the current from other panels in the array. A solar array requires blocking diodes when it features more than one panel arranged in parallel. Installing a blocking diode requires basic understanding of photovoltaic systems and electrical wiring. Choose Blocking Diodes Purchase a blocking diode that fits the wiring and current of your solar panel. For large solar panels and arrays that get a great deal of sun, select heavy-duty diodes. Ensure the diode is compatible with the maximum temperature of your system. Remove any packaging from the diode, and identify the positive and negative sides. Open the Solar Panel Electrical Box Disconnect your solar panel from the array. Flip it over, and locate the electrical box. On most panels, the box is situated on the bottom of the panel; it should have two wires extending from one side. Remove the cover from the box, but keep in mind that doing so may void your warranty. Depending on the design, you may need to cut away the top of the cover or use a heat gun to release the adhesive. Pry off the cover with a screwdriver.   Expose the Positive Solar Panel Connector Locate the positive and negative connectors inside the box. If the connectors are not marked with a + or - sign, examine the external connection wires. The red wire leads to the positive connector, and the black wire leads to the negative connector. Insert a screwdriver into the screw that connects the positive lead to the board. Depending on the design, you may need to remove a nut with an adjustable wrench. Remove off the screw or nut, and set it aside. Lift off the positive connector.   Connect Electrical Leads to the Diode If your diode has wires extending from either side, locate the positive wire. Bend it in a loop that fits around the positive connector. If the diode does not have build-in wires, cut positive and negative lead wires. Solder each lead to the ends of the diode. Solder standard ring connectors to the ends of the leads. Cover the leads with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape. Alternatively, purchase pre-covered positive and negative electrical leads and solder them to the diode.   Connect the Blocking Diode Slip the positive lead over the positive connector on the solar panel. Replace the positive panel lead, and insert the screw or nut back in place. Tighten it to secure the lead. Disconnect all wires from the battery. Slip the negative lead over the positive battery terminal. This alignment allows the current to flow from the panel, into the positive end of the diode, and out the negative end. The negative end of the diode prevents the current from flowing backward into the panel.   How to Buy Blocking Diodes on eBay On eBay, you can search for a wide variety of blocking diodes from sellers across the world. To find the correct size for your PV array, use the search bar at the top of the page to search for "blocking diode." Scroll down the list to find the diode that fits your solar panel. For a more targeted search, use the filters to the left of the page to refine the results. Read the listing description thoroughly to verify that the diode is compatible with your system.
