This brass letterpress printing type block is mounted on hard wood and was used to letterpress print "Jet Bonded Brake Shoes" advertising and promotional pieces, beginning about 70 years ago.  My grandfather owned a printing company in Baltimore, Maryland and during his many years in the business he often printed advertising signage for large or small businesses.  There is a very subtle textured hatching running through depiction of the two jets, which may not show up in the photos, but definitely adds a classy look to the wood and brass creation.  The printing block is 5 3/8" x 3" and is standard type height, approximately .918 ". Brass or other metal was sometimes used making the printing type because it was more durable than wood and would hold up longer in order to make the increased number of prints that might be required.  The metal plate could also hold detail better than all wood. The brass cut was produced, then mounted to a hardwood laminated block, creating the standard height for letterpress printing.  The blank spaces in this piece allowed for a second "overprint" to be used that might include options, even in  different color, for different car repair shops to include their own contact information.  This of course made it easy for the printer to offer each repair shop flexibility in what they wanted to say in this promotional piece.  The final print might have been used as a business postcard or maybe a letterhead on an invoice or estimate.   The wording on the block says:                                                            FULLY GUARANTEED                                                                       JET                                                        BONDED BRAKE SHOES                                                                       ONE                                                                      AXLE                                                                       SET                                         RENEWED TO FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS I have included a 'mirror image' photo of this printing cut (backwards/flipped) so you can see how it would appear in its printed version.  Of course you can also see this clearly by standing with it in front of any mirror! This collectible item is truly a piece of letterpress history!
