Wood Box Of 40 Vintage Letterpress Pica-based Thin Steel Gauges / What Are They?

US $760

I hate to admit it, since I once made hot type printing my trade, but I have never come across this particular set of thin spring steel gauges (if that's what they are, that is). I'd appreciate hearing from someone who knows what they are. My guess is that they have something to do with a type-setting machine.  Maybe a Linotype.  I ran a Ludlow line-casting machine for years, so I don't think it's that. It came from a plant in Wahoo, Nebraska, where they printed a newspaper since the turn of the 20th century, and had a job shop as well. They are almost all from H.B.R. & Co., with a couple from the Chicago Newspaper Union. They are maybe one-point or less in thickness, and range from 4 to 45 picas long, including half-pica increments. They are all 5-1/2 picas deep (5 picas below the shoulder. Is that type-high?) No manufacturer's name on the 9" by 5-1/2" by 1-1/4" box, which is made of a varnished hardwood -- very nice. The slots are velvet-lined. The brass hinges and clip closure are in excellent condition. No chips, cracks, stains, warping or other marring to the wood.
