City livery companies date back to the 12th century when they had the power to determine who could trade, set prices and wages and ensure the quality of the relevant trade or activity. A guild is an association of artisans or merchants who oversee the practice of their craft in a particular town. The earliest types of guild were formed as confraternities of tradesmen. They were organized in a manner something between a professional association, trade union, a cartel, and a secret society. They often depended on grants of letters patent by a monarch or other authority to enforce the flow of trade to their self-employed members, and to retain ownership of tools and the supply of materials. A lasting legacy of traditional guilds are the guildhalls constructed and used as meeting places. Guild members who were found guilty of cheating on the public would be fined or banned from the guild. 26 WE COMBINE SHIPPING BUY 1 TO 4 TRADE ADVERTISING CARDS AND THE TOTAL TO SHIP IS $2 BUY 5 TRADE ADVERTISING CARDS AND SHIPPING IS FREE NOTE: ON LARGER INTERNATIONAL ORDERS WE MAY REQUIRE REGISTERD MAIL AND WILL SPLIT THE COST WITH THE BUYER.
