Large Staghorn Sumac Natural Edge Wood Slab In my travels I had located a secretive man in magical Door County, Wisconsin who, between 25 to 30 years ago, had harvested some of America’s finest wood from his land and kept it air drying and hoarded in a lumber barn ever since.  In his barn, I have found some of the most exquisite lumber I have ever seen, and best of all, it has been air drying for nearly 3 decades.  I have done and planed many projects with the wood but I do have some left over that I am willing to sell in order to offset my purchase costs.  Amongst all of the wood, I located an incredibly rare flitch of a large Staghorn Sumac – for auction here is just one piece of it.  It was cut-dated May of 1986.  The man told me that in the 80’s he painted the ends to control the air-drying process, which makes sense and is the white you see on it in the photos.  Sumac wood is not commercially available and you will not find a piece like this elsewhere on ebay, etsy or anywhere else I looked.  If you seek Sumac lumber then you know how rare this piece of wood is in this size. Dimensions: 37 1/2 ” Long!!! 10 3/4 ” at the Widest Width           2 1/4 ” at the Thickest Point I have applied mineral spirits to the wood in some photos to further show the grain pattern.   I have lightly hand-planed and sanded the flat side just to be able to properly depict the unique design of this piece’s grain.  This is not a finished piece. As with most natural edge, air dried wood there are things about it that are not perfect.  There is a check and divot in the crotch (pictured), chipping around the edge and other imperfections as shown in the photos.   I don’t know if I’ll be selling more of the flitch, I just wanted to throw this piece up on ebay to see what the response would be.  Thank you so much for looking and good luck on the auction.
