Every time you insert an IC into a solder less breadboard, you risk bending the pins.  A Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) socket solves this problem by allowing you to drop in the IC, then lock it into place.  The ZIF 40 socket in this kit will handle any DIP IC up to 40 pins.  Shown in the picture is an 8-pin Atmel processor locked in for programming. Please indicate your preference for male or female headers with your kit.  (If no selection is made, male headers will be sent.)
