Whitcomb Blaisdell Machine Tool Co., Lathes and Planers, by The Whitcomb Blaisdell Machine Tool Co., Worcester, Mass., 1921, 8 1/2 x 11 paperback, in a clear report cover, 22 pages. Reprinted in 2012 by Nation Builder Books, Mebane, NC 27302. Please note this is a new photocopied reproduction, NOT an original. Blaisdel and Whitcomb are two prominent names in the industrial history of Worcester, with links going back to the earliest machinery builders of the early 1800s. They were known for their big lathes and planers, but also made shapers, drills, shears, and much more. Whitcomb-Blaisdell Machine Tool Co., was incorporated in June, 1905, as a combination of the Whitcomb Mfg. Co., The Whitcomb Foundry Co. and P. Blaisdell & Co.. In October of the same year the company acquired the Draper Machine Tool Co. Sources the time state that the firm employed about one hundred and fifty men in the machine shop and one hundred and fifty in the foundry, the former composed largely of Swedes, Irish and Americans and the latter of Finns, Poles and Lithuanians. In 1922, the company was merged into the Reed-Prentice Co. which continued to produce their metalworking machinery into the mid-twentieth century. A 1909 history of Worcester states: The Whitcomb Blaisdell Machine Tool Company at 134 Gold Street is officered by AW Whitcomb president Charles E Hildreth vice president and treasurer and Charles E Thwing sales manager Capitalized at $200,000 it is indissolulily linked with the early history of Worcester as a metal trade centre The company traces its ancestry back to the Draper Machine Tool Company founded in Worcester in 1845 to the Whitcomb Manufacturing Company founded in 1849 to the concern known as P Blaisdell & Company started in 1865 and to the Whitcomb Foundry Company which succeeded the Kabley Foundry Company which was founded in 1885 Alonzo Whitcomb one of the founders of the company came to Worcester in 1845 and entered the machine shops of SC Coombs & Company pioneers in the metal trades in this city He stayed with them until 1849 when with his brother Carter he purchased the copying press business of George C Taft on Union Street in the famous old Howe & Goddard shop The concern was known as C Whitcomb & Company. In addi tion to making copying presses the Vliitcombs took up manufacture of metal working machine tools including planers shears drills etc which soon became the main branch of business After many removes owing to the continued growth of business in 1892 Mr Whitcomb finally built the present at the corner of Sargent and Gold Streets The Draper Mjachine Tool Company ano ther of the ances tors of this concern was the pioneer lathe making industry Worcester and one of the earliest manufacturers of lathes this country This concern actually antedated the incorporation of the city having been started in 1845 by Shepherd Lathe & Company and was known as the Lathe & Morse Company prior to its being merged in the Draper concern The Draper Company was organized in 1892 succeeding Lathe & Morse Tool Company with Hon William F Draper Hopedale as president and CE Thwing treasurer It made specialty of engine lathes crank planers screw machinery etc and built up a splendid business not only at home but abroad Its plant was located on Gold Street also WA Blaisdell came into the Whitcomb Blaisdell from the concern known as P Blaisdell & Company which established by Parritt Blaisdell in 1855 Parritt Blaisdell worked for Wood Light & Company prior to this date, latter concern was it contemporary of SC Coombs & Company These two concerns with Daniel Wheeler builder of woolen machinery Samuel Flagg & Company makers of engine lathes Sunnier Pratt & Company manufacturers of reeds harnesses and heddles William A Wheeler brass founder and steam engine builder and Henry S Washburn Ichabod Washburn and Philip L Moen wire manufacturers were among the pioneers in the Worcester metal trade Parritt Rlaisdell died in 1874 and his business was taken over by JP Jones Samuel E Hildreth and Enoch Earle Mr Hildreth was the father of the present treasurer of the Whit comb Blaisdell Company and on his death his son succeeded to his interest The Draper Machine Tool Company and P Blaisdell Company hail achieved marked success in the manufacture of engine lathes and P Blaisdell & Company had had similar success in the construction of upright drills Samuel E Hildreth had had issued him the ground patents on a quick return upright drill The success in their respective fields achieved 1 y all their predecessors has been duplicated and continued the present concern Particularly is this true of their specialties their second belt drive planer and their new type of lathe a three step cone double back gear lathe and their patent cnsliioned clutch single pulley drive lathe They have done a very large business from the formation of the company up to the time of the recent business depression They enjoy a good export trade shipping to England France Sweden Holland Belgium Russia Germany Australia the Philippines and Japan besides all parts of the United States and its possessions Canada Mexico and South America Their plant lying between Gold and Sargent Streets covers an area of 44 1577 square feet and in addition they have a most desirable building site on Cambridge and Camp Streets comprising 129.817 square feet and having 401 feet frontage on the New York Xew Haven & Hartford Railroad awaiting the future development of the business The Whitcomb Blaisdell Company in spite of its long and most honorable history dating back in its various ramifications more than sixty years is not resting on its past reputation to sell its goods There is not a more up to date concern in Worcester nor one with more modern ideas in its management and machines The present corporation dates from 1905.
