Two Pair Package Safety Blitz Deal   There are shops and schools out there that are unaware of the danger of cast press plates.  Cast press plates are a “mistake” and should never have been sold.    We are starting an ALL OUT SAFETY BLITZ DEAL to end this disturbing situation.  We have purchased a large quantity of high precision X-BARS.  These are the most smoothly cut bars we have seen to date. We have partially ground the perimeter (not the actual notches), deburred the functional edges just as we do our popular, fully ground, X-BARS.  We are making them available at a price that is so compelling everybody can afford to be safe, while using the best press accessories available.   You can buy this Two Pair Package Deal for your own use, to donate to a school, to give to a friend….heck…contact a friend or associate with a press and offer to go in on a Two Pair Package Deal of X-BARs and split the modest $140 cost.  Everybody wins!  That’s only $70 a pair, with FREE Priority Mail 2 Day shipping….right to your door.   We have got to get these bars out there.   This is an attempt to fix a problem.   Please help.  If every shop owner would fix their problem and one other shop, we could share a mutual feeling of great satisfaction.    If you don’t have cast press plates, use these over your existing bars for better, faster setups and improved load spreading.  You will reduce potential damage to pulleys, bearing races, bearing splitters, gears etc..   Following is our recent article explaining the problem.   Hydraulic Shop Press Plate Safety Issue Published Aug 25, 2014                                     History Historically, Harbor Freight and others have imported and sold thousands of 12 and 20 ton hydraulic shop arbor presses with cast press plates.  These low cost presses have received generally good reviews from end users.  However, the low quality, press plates supplied with these presses, have been a disaster.  Many have catastrophically failed resulting in appallingly unnecessary injuries and liability claims.   Mystery Solved Probably for cost reasons, the wrong material was chosen and the plates were made larger to compensate for this poor choice of materials.  Forensic research reveals that these “giant” castings may contain voids and inclusions that weaken the already brittle structure.  What makes them especially dangerous is, the plate may perform for years until it is turned 90 degrees or a chip (stress riser) accidently slips under one corner, and the whole plate fails under loading.  This can “set off” a chain reaction where the second plate also fails explosively from sudden double loading.    It is well known that cast structures are good in compression but very poor in tension.  Here is the engineering problem.  A bending beam is in compression on one side, and tension on the other.  It is the tension side that initially fails – first microscopically and then catastrophically.   A press plate, in use, stores a lot of energy.  When that energy is released (usually under maximum load or shock), a cast plate fragments with a BANG, sending pieces in all directions.   Help Yourself, Help Others Please assist with spreading this information to schools, automotive/marine, heavy duty and industrial shops.   Our Shop We bought an imported 20 ton shop press with two cumbersome, notched, cast press plates.  When looking online for an upgrade for these awkwardly large plates, we discovered the health and safety issue.  At that point we wanted three things:   1) Avoid injury and litigation with A SAFE set of plates 2) STRONGER, LIGHTER more “slideable” plates for faster more adaptable setups 3) MEANINGFUL  notches (to be discussed in a future article)   An Attractive  Solution for  Your Shop We never found what we were looking for.  We had a few plates cut from fairly expensive, carefully chosen, high strength steel that is 37 times less brittle than cast.  That’s what we wanted… strong, high tensile steel that would eventually bend before it breaks, even if overloaded.  As you know, tool steels like a bearing race, are hard, high tensile strength steel but, will shatter just like cast under load and shock.  Not just any “strong” steel will work. Order this 4 piece set now to have available for your next job. Note:  This 4 piece set may be shipped in two (2) separate packages, to spare your postal carriers back.  Please do NOT start a case for "item not as described" when you recieve the first box.
