Artist Statement - Tiyana Bucknor - June 2015 When first introduced to this project, I began pondering on how to make the most cohesive and creative connection with the purpose of this assignment and my personal approach. I chose to focus on the process of construction and the general tools involved with "making things right." I chose construction because when I think of the trades, it is the first connection that comes to my mind, as well as it being in clear relation to Mike Holmes. I started off by formulating three thumbnail sketches for my hard hat from various points of view. I then decided that I wanted to go further, so I created a fourth thumbnail drawing that combined my original ideas with 'new components. In order to come up with my composition I began to think of the different areas of my construction hat as separate entities that come together by being on the same surface. By splitting the composition up into different quadrants, I was able to achieve  multiple points of action separated by points of negative space. I used acrylic paint as my medium for this piece and I am happy with my results. I layered the paint multiple times to add more intensity to the colours which also creates texture. I mainly used stippling and gel medium techniques with my paint to create the effects that I was going for. In addition, I mixed my colours very well to make the tones look as realistic as possible. This project allowed me to learn how to take my 2D painting skills and apply them to a 3D surface. All in all, my overall idea relates to me very well. This is because in high school there is a lot of talk about post-secondary education and future careers. This task has helped me on my journey of figuring out what I'd like to do after high school. Finally, I paid a great deal of attention on this assignment by working at the best pace possible to get the best outcome. I worked very hard to make my design as neat as possible which was very difficult. I am still considering my options for post-secondary.
