Artist Statement - Prabhjot Gill - June 2015   Through my Visual Arts class, I created piece of artwork that was focused around construction, which is formed on a hard hat. Everyone has his or her own motivation and inspiration when it comes to creating any piece of art. For me that inspiration came through by the idea of construction work along with all the major aspects connected to it for examples materials used such as tools and machinery. Also, an artist named Leo Sewell inspired me; he worked on sculptures using junk materials. His artworks were unique and challenging to do. On my hard hat I added tools on the hat to further support my piece. To really emphasize the importance of tools I was inspired to create many tools on it, which again helped to symbolize the importance of tools, which helps to create stronger piece.   My design was regarding construction like tools, machinery, and construction signs. The subject matter that I chose was related to construction, than I made a decision to use the colors to demonstrate my theme by using yellow, orange, and black in my piece; as they are related to construction sites. I wanted to relate something with Mike Holmes as we were making the hats for his foundation. I made the decision to feature the show "Make it Right". On one aspect of the hat I made a decision to place varieties styles of tools, on the opposite aspect to be machinery and on the top of the hat I place the warning sign. For the rim I added black for the road by using the stippling technique by having the road type of texture.   The medium has an enormous influence on how your artwork would appear at the end. My piece of work demonstrated darks and lights as to make it appear to be more reasonable piece. For my construction hat I used acrylic paint because I like for my artwork to dry fast. Sometimes if you make a mistake its easy to fix it using this form of median. What I learned was that the stippling technique is a great technique when working with acrylic paints, as it allows the different layers of paint to blend well furthermore I worked well on blending the colors from light to dark by mixing. Also it was challenge of creating objects and details on a curve type of surface. Throughout this piece I learned to pay attention to detail for an artwork to appear remarkable at the end.   The construction hat project was significant to me because since I was young I was always interested at observing construction sites and watching home renovators on HGTV. ! am proud of what I have accomplished at the end. My artwork had a theme of construction and it appeared better than I thought it would have. Overall, I am satisfied with my art piece and enjoyed working on it. After high school I want to do a Bachelor of Social Work at Guelph Humber or York University.
