Equipment and Methods for Harvesting Farm Woodland Products, Farmers’ Bulletin No. 1907, originally published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, July 1942, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 paperback, 25 pages. Reprinted by Nation Builder Books, Mebane, NC, 2009. Please note that this is a PHOTOCOPIED reproduction of the 1942 original. The accompanying images were scanned from a reprint, not the original. Of course, you’re not going to get a lot of details in 25 pages. But these little USDA booklets packed some of the best, most concise information available in a neat little package you could easily put in your pocket and take into the field. They provided a good overview to give you a some basis for judging if some idea you had for improving your farm operation was feasible or not. In many cases, farmers had enough hands-on working skills that they could figure out the rest on their own. But there were often more detailed booklets on more specific questions available, or the local extension agent knew where to get more information, if he didn’t already have it, that is. Table of Contents: Felling trees and making logs Skidding and hauling logs Loading Log grading and sealing Poles and piling Posts, mine timbers, excelsior, and pulpwood Ties Fuel Wood Shakes Sharpening crosscut saws Air-drying lumber Controlling blue stain and checking in logs.
