Salem Iron Works Catalogue L, with Illustrations and Descriptions of the Hege Eureka Portable Saw Mills, by the Salem Iron Works, Winston-Salem, NC. Reproduced in 2009 by Nation Builder Books, Mebane, NC. 6 x 9 paperback, 16 pages + 4 page insert. Please note this is a new photocopied reproduction, not an original. There is no date printed in this rare catalog, but there is a hand-written notation of “1907” inside the front cover. The Salem Iron Works were owned and operated by Constantine Hege, who began the business in 1867 from a small shed in Salem. Hege had served in the Confederate Army, in North Carolina 48th Infantry Regiment, which fought at South Mountain and Antietam. He was captured in October, 1863, during the battle at Bristow Station, Va. After consulting with friends, Hege gave allegiance to the Union, and was released in March, 1864. Following his friends’ instructions, Hege proceeded to Bethlehem, Penn., where was employed in the Bethlehem Iron Works. He returned to North Carolina in April 1865, but soon spent another year in Pennsylvania, at a business school, before returning and establishing a small foundry. In 1877, Hege obtained a patent on an improved set works for circular saw mills, and at once began the manufacture of saw mills, which proved to be very popular. By 1882 the business had grown and his engines, wood planers, saw mills, and woodworking machinery were in great demand. Hege erected a three-story manufactory on Salt Street near downtown. By the beginning of the 1890s, Hege’s wood working machinery, and more especially the Hege saw mills, were well and favorably known, and sold in over twenty-five states of the United States, and several foreign countries. This reproduced catalog includes a great drawing of an aerial view of the factory, and depicts set works, head blocks, and other components. There are 14 very nice line drawings of different Salem-Hege sawmills.
