CD Title: Glass Blowing Methods, 1902. The Methods of Glass Blowing and Working Silica in the Oxy-Gas Flame. This wonderful book is a productive mix of instructional manual and technical handbook. In one volume, we are taken from innocence to seeing the myriad and amazing possibilities of making laboratory and other useful appliances of glass.  You can read the detailed content pages further down this page. Sample images from this CD Almost without exception the advice and methods are still perfect for the modern times. However it should be noted that the purity of glassblowing glass chemistry today is so high that many of the problems they note like variation from batch to batch and "devitrification" due to chemical contaminants in the glass are very rare. Also the issues such as lack of proper annealing of stock is very rare, today the processes are tightly controlled and very accurate. Also control over pressure of gases and regulator accuracy and such are very good today, so those concerns are gone. In essence, everything in the handbook and instructions remain wonderfully useful and accurate methods, just remove the concerns about quality of materials or supplies or such the book discusses. Even at the turn of last century when the author was discussing methods - it was already clear that it made little sense economically to manufacture items that were mass produced such as thermometers or simple test tubes or beakers or such. However the flexibility then and now, to be able to manufacture custom glassware on a moments notice or repair glassware and thus keep your lab efficient is still immensely valuable. Besides that, in the middle of the intellectual challenges of science - there is a certain delight to be found in the simple joys of making something by hand with skill and getting the immediate use of the resulting product or tools you made. Sometimes even a bold and capable intellect needs moments of simplicity and glassblowing is an ideal activity for such. In its simplicity and elegance can be found a kind of zen relaxation and simply joy of doing. From joining tubes to calibrating manometers or thermometers or making a flask, it is all covered so clearly even your kids will find it easy to understand and do. Enjoy this one, but be warned, like playing the violin, glassblowing is addictive. You will find yourself inventing reasons to make things instead of buy them ! Now you can again delight and learn from them. This is a great drafting and drawing book, excellent instruction, great drawings to learn from, ideal for someone starting out or someone wanting to see what good standards used to be, and still are.
