Review: This is a down to earth practical glassblowing instruction and technical guide. You can start knowing really nothing and end up competent to make scientific glassware or mirrors. Very practical instruction. By confining the scope of this work to laboratory glass blowing, the author does us a great service in that we can learn the concepts and issues of stress and strain and softening point, annealing, methods of working glass, cleaning, handling, avoiding contamination of our works, and the myriad of tradecraft techniques without encumbering our discussion with other uses for class and their manufacturing or chemistry issues. One of the best ways to learn well is to constrain our focus till we can achieve competence. That is exactly what this handbook does. We become expert at laboratory glassblowing. The drawings and illustrations are clear and sufficient to the point of instruction. They make it clear how to do the explained technique or craft. What is most extraordinary is the number of good tradecraft techniques, tricks of the trade - to make it easy to construct everything from thermometers to mirrored condenser assemblies. As a glassblower who has made tens of thousands of laboratory articles and repaired as many over my younger years, I was delighted with this book and wish I had had it when I started learning glassblowing. The burns and heartache and wasted material it would have saved would have been a dramatic difference for me. From explanations of the kinds of glass chemistry to explanations of their properties to tricks to make the correct solutions work to clean or silver glass - to - methods of calibration of thermometers, scoring glass, fritting glass fittings for perfect seals, to well - everything you need to know - to do lab glass - this is a perfect book. Use it, read it. learn tricks you never knew you never knew. (humor) Seriously, get it and enjoy. Whether you are an experienced glassblower or a novice, or just truly curious how "those guys" managed to make some complex piece of lab ware, now you can now the best ways.   Presented in easy to view PDF file format. Now you can again delight and learn from them. This is a great drafting and drawing book, excellent instruction, great drawings to learn from, ideal for someone starting out or someone wanting to see what good standards used to be, and still are.
