Oxford Tennelec TC 175 Low Noise Preamplifier for Proportional Counters This is an Oxford Tennelec TC 175 charge sensitive FET preamplifier with instruction manual. The TENNELEC Model TC 175 FET Charge-Sensitive Preamplifier was specifically designed for use with proportional counters requiring up to 5kV of bias. The TC 175 can also be used with room-temperature silicon surface barrier detectors and scintillation counters which use low-gain photomultipliers (or standard scintillation counters in the x-ray range of energies). The TC 175 output signal is compatible with all commercially available main amplifiers which use conventional pulse shaping networks—the TC 175 does NOT have a shaping network of its own. The input FET is fully protected against rapid or large changes in detector bias supply voltage and protected to a lesser degree against accidental short circuits at the input connector while bias voltage is applied. The background count due to corona in the preamplifier is guaranteed to be less than 10 c.p.m. at a threshold of 100X the rms noise level. Below 5 kV, the background due to corona drops rapidly and is essentially zero at 2kV. The rms noise level is equivalent to 15 eV at an effective gas multiplication factor of 1,000 (P-10 gas) when the external capacitance is 20 pF and the amplifier shaping constant is 4 μs. The input coupling capacitor is a polystyrene film unit to eliminate the piezo electric ringing characteristics of ceramic capacitors.
