Proffessionally manufactured in the UK with all components sourced from reputable suppliers, i.e. Digikey, Mouser, RS etc. Supplied assembled and tested with pluggable connectors, so you can use one board to run several different machines. Fully open source with a huge following, means firmware can be used for a wide range of applications, WITHOUT difficulty. Its Smooth!!!!! *** Features *** Click to Enlarge NXP LPC 1769 32-bits Cortex-M3 MCU Powerful enough to allow look-ahead acceleration management, resulting in smooth, jerk-free motion and enabling higher speeds. This is implimented in current firmware and simply not possible on Arduino type electronics. This makes Smoothiboard more precise and fast!!! Click to Enlarge EASY to configure and use Unlike other electronics / firmware combinations, making changes to the configuration is done by simply editing a single text file and reset-ing the board. What's more, the sd card shows up on your pc like any other attached drive so editing the text file is very quick and convenient. The config file is easy to understand, backed up with a "how to" wiki and even allows you to change the pins for each function so if you want to mod the hardware in some way, like use other unused pins for some of the functions, this can be done without modifying the firmware. The smoothieboard website has step by step guides for each machine type and is supported by a community of really helpful people making it very easy to understand if you are building your first machine or struggle with software side of things. When new firmware is available flashing it is as easy as copying the newer verision to your sd card, no external programmers or software required. Compare this to other systems where the user has to install additonal software, edit and re-compile / upload new firmware everytime a single setting needs altering. Forget about those stk500 errors and debugging code etc! Of course, if you like a challenge, you can download all the source (everything is open) and compile the firmware if you prefer. Click to Enlarge Onboard Ethernet, USB and sd card reader. All of which work out of the box! Just plug an sd card with the config file (easily found on the smoothie website), install the smoothieboard driver for your operating sytem (very easy as there is an installer on the smoothie website) and then it is ready to connect via USB. Or, after inserting the sd card (and enabling network connection in the config file) plug the board in to your router and connect via the web interface (no driver required!). Click to Enlarge Built in web server If you connect the smoothieboard to your router, you can access (and control) the board from your web browser, or if you perfer it works fine with normal PC based software like Printrun etc. We are working on an LCD panel at the present which will allow fully stand alone printing. Click to Enlarge 5x A4982 Stepper Motor Drivers The A4982 is the prefered stepper motor driver for Reprap type printers and is chosen for its 1/16 microstepping and overall good performance with up to 2A per motor. 5 drivers allow you to control a 3D printer with dual extruder. There are also breakout points on the board next to each stepper driver allowing you to connect other stepper drivers if for instance you needed a high current driver for a large motor on a custom machine. Click to Enlarge 6 MOSFETs A mixture of 3 low power ( 7A max for fans etc) and 3 high power (12A max for heat bed and two extruders) MOSFETs There are multiple options in the config file for the use of these MOSFETs including PID Autotuning. If you have a requirement to switch something very large (like a spindle for a CNC machine) you can easily attach a solid state relay to one of the free pins. Click to Enlarge High Quality PCB 4-Layer 2oz copper pcb with excellent thermal conduction from the stepper drivers which removes the need for extra heatsinks / fans. Click to Enlarge On board Digital Potentiometers The current for each stepper motor is controlled from the config file, no need for adjusting potentiometers and reading off multimeters. There are 3 spare digital pots and breakout pins for using them. Click to Enlarge High quality pluggable connectors throughout We have chosen to supply pluggable connectors for all functions allowing a single board to be easily transferred from machine to machine if you are thinking of building different types of machine and want to keep costs down. We will supply additional connector sets in our "other items" to make this easy. Our 5.0mm Pluaggable terminal blocks are rated to 15A and the 3.5mm up to 8A. Click to Enlarge Better choice of Endstop connectors One slight oversight in the origional design of this board is that the KK100 connectors used for the endstop connection are too close together, such that if you try to attach all 6 (keep in mind most peole only use 3) you have to force the connectors as there isn't a gap for them to move freely. We have chosen a combination of the KK100 and right angle pin headers which allow all 6 to be connected securely, without risk of damaging the connectors.
