Sodium Silicate is the common name for compounds with the formula Na2(SiO2)nO. A well known member of this series is sodium metasilicate, Na2SiO3. Also known as waterglass or liquid glass.  This is the white powder form with 19% crystallization water. To make 40% solution of water glass, you just add about equal weight of water and let it dissolve overnight. So you get two pounds for the price of one! They are used in cements, passive fire protection, textile and lumber processing, refractories, and automobiles.   There are a number of neat experiments you can do with it. Four examples: (1) As shown in the photos, a chemical garden is an experiment in chemistry normally performed by adding solid metal salts such as copper sulfate or cobalt(II) chloride to an aqueous solution of sodium silicate (otherwise known as waterglass). This results in growth of plant like forms in minutes to hours. Common salts used in a chemical garden Aluminium potassium sulfate crystals – White Copper(II) sulfate crystals – Blue Chromium(III) chloride crystals – Green Nickel(II) sulfate crystals – Green Iron(II) sulfate crystals – Green Iron(III) chloride crystals – Orange Cobalt(II) chloride crystals – Purple The chemical garden relies on the fact that most transition metal silicates are insoluble in water and are colored. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_garden https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAr7mvBjWq8 (2) Silicone Super Ball http://www.flinnsci.com/media/395431/cf0758.50.pdf It bounces between your floor and ceiling dozens of times with just one throw! (3) Silane (Gas that self-ignites in air) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dWTOZwBiRM We sell the magnesium powder too. Hydrochloric acid is available in any hardware store. (4) Create crackled texture on pottery surface https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zb4AG3Hh20 Sodium Silicate is highly alkaline and corrosive. Use goggles and gloves to protect yourself.
