Take the compound box and slip it on,  There is a little thumb screw that will fit in the 1/4" hole, at the front base,  and at the rear of the base, that will make the box to fit snug. You have to unscrew the thumb screws to release the box so it can slide off the base when you want to clean the tool. The handles are on the bottom of base, either left or right side. Now you're ready to put compound in the box where it will fall on top of the tape, then pull the tape up over the wheel, then place the wheel over the drywall joint and roll down the joint with the tape putting the mud and tape over the joint. It is so easy and simple. The compound comes out on top of tape. This tool can be set on a ladder, or a bucket, or a bench. Great for a rolling scaffold. You can pull the tape by hand without rolling it out with the wheel. You will have both hands free to place the tape on the joints, and to wipe. With the excess mud you can spot the nails, or skim the joint, because you use the mud thick enough, to stay on the knife.     Now you're ready to put compound in the box where it will fall on top of the tape, then pull the tape up over the wheel, then place the wheel over the drywall joint and roll down the joint with the tape putting the mud and tape over the joint.
