Grey  Watson Barnet, Greenough-Style Stereomicroscope  (stereo microscope)  with  10x Eyepieces and interchangeable Objective Lenses Objectives present: 2.5x, 10x It is supplied, as are all Greenough stereomicroscopes, with dual porro prisms. This Greenough microscope is named after its American inventor Horatio Saltonstall Greenough. This style stereomicroscope was first built by the German Company Carl Zeiss, following a meeting between Mr. Greenough and Dr. Ernst Abbe of Carl Zeiss . The microscope, with its two interchangeable dual objectives, weighs approximately 6 pounds 5.8 ounces, and is approximately 10-1/2 inches tall, as shown. It has a weighted base which at widest point is approximately 4-3/4 inches. The base allows  for taller irregular objects to be examined without having to place them on a stage. The stereomicroscope has paired Watson 10x eyepieces.  The last picture is the detail, seen through this microscope using the 2.5x objective, of a portion of a Mexican cinco pesos (5 pesos) bill. Please note that although 10x dual objective goes on easily and works, sliding attachment on this objective does not move all the way to full closure by hand. Although for use it can be inserted and partly locked by hand, full locking may require use of a screwdriver or other tool. One eyepiece lens allows independent adjustment of focus, to accommodate for differences in visual acuity between left and right eyes .  ______________________________ The London Manufacurer: Watson Barnet (Watson Barnet is now a subsidiary of Pye Instruments Group, which is majority owned by Philips) William Watson founded his company in c. 1837 at City Road, Clerkenwell, London. However, according to Bracegirdle (Bracegirdle, 1996), the first Watson microscope was not made until 1876, at which time the company was known as W. Watson & Son, and located at 313 High Holborn, London. The name was later changed to W. Watson and Sons, after a second son became part of the company. The company was still located at the 313 High Holborn address. William Watson died in 1881 and the last Watson microscope was made c. 1970.  The company initially gained renown with their non-stereomicroscopes, the well-made Van Heurck models, with two rack and pinion mechanisms allowing English or Continental length microscope tubes to be used.  These instruments were based on the designs, and named for, the famed Belgian microscopist Henri Van Heurck .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            -- © RJK 2014 Authorized __________                                                                                                                          No need for concern about stock pictures not matching the item for sale.                               PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ACTUAL ITEMS FOR SALE  These pictures are part of this listing, and we hope they can answer most questions.  However, please feel free to ask any questions you may need answered to make an informed decision.
