Here is a feature-rich signal generator / waveform synthesizer manufactured by a supplier of quality test equipment: Wavetek. Signal output below, through, and beyond the HF bands is available: 1 MicroHertz through 50 Megahertz. Output includes sine, square, triangle, and ramp waveforms along with programmable sweep capability. Abundant information, including the operations manual, is available at no cost on the web. The following narrative, coupled with the photos included above, describe how this unit is working for me on my bench. Your results may vary – I make no representation that it will work for you as it works for me, and it is being sold as-is with no returns accepted under any circumstances. There may be additional problems I have not described, as I have not tested all functionality. I am listing it this way because 1) there are obvious issues with the unit, and 2) regrettably some eBay buyers replace good boards and components with bad ones, claim the product is not as represented, and force the seller to take it back and eat the shipping charges. Nice, huh? So here is what I noticed. The unit needs some work to function reliably, but it definitely did not check out DOA: This unit sometimes passes self-test and sometimes does not. Switching it off and then on again eventually got it going for me. The problem seems to occur less often as the unit warms up. The square wave wave form distorts at higher frequencies. The sweep function seems to work fine: Wavetek 178 Sweeping Set to 50 mHz, the output shown on my HP-5334A is 49.999830 mHz. That’s pretty close! Photos show various outputs. Nothing other than the Wavetek 178 is included in the auction. Uses a standard PC type power cord you supply. Frequency used in photos is 1 kHz except if otherwise indicated. I am not responsible for mistranslates): The Model 178 Programmable Waveform Synthesizer is a 1 uHz to 50 MHz multifunction sweep synthesizer that can operate as a trigger, gate or burst generator at levels to 20 volts peak-to-peak. lt is synthesized to 8 digits in all modes. Its main generator, an 8 digit 50 MHz synthesizer, pro- duces sine and square waves and, at reduced fre- quencies, triangles, ramps, pulses and haverwaves. An external reference input can phase lock the syn- thesizer by locking the reference source. Phase lock- ing allows the synthesizer to operate as a variphase generator with phase offset in 0.01 ° increments. The output level is specified into a 500 load from 1 mV to 20 Vp-p with 3 digits resolution. DC offset can be programmed to vary the waveform base line i1OV. Amplitude is displayed in units of Vp-p, Vrms or dBm for any waveform. The internal sweep generator varies the main generator frequency (linearly or logarithmically) be- tween the start and stop frequencies. The sweep generator has its own operating modes: triggered, gated, hold at start and hold at stop. In addition, ten programmable frequency markers, available one ata time, can be used to indicate critical frequencies within the sweep. The sweep generator can internally trigger the main generator to produce pulses with a 10)us to 10 min. repetition rate and 5)us to 5 days pulse width. Two external inputs may be used to phase- or amplitude-modulate the synthesizer. lf the synthesizer is phase modulated, the main generator (when operating at frequencies above 500 kHz) varies upto i360°. When amplitude modulated, the output can be modulated up to 200%. Data entry is from the front panel or GPIB with microprocessors controlling the data. Numeric input is entered in free format: fixed, floating or exponential notation. Parameters may be entered in any order. ln- ternally, all entries are checked for errors and interac- tively displayed on the front panel. Up to 5 complete sets of programming may be stored and rapidly recalled. That’s about all I can tell you other than this piece of equipment is heavy and not cheap to ship.
