Beautiful consistently robin's egg blue eggs, large to x-large eggs, 250 to 270 or more per year! Excellent foragers, winter hardy with good shelter and calm disposition. Hens rarely go broody, a big pus! Fresh eggs are FERTILE as I just hatched off 98%! on the FBCM and 92% on CCL! Eggs from younger hens are green blue and can be very dark at first. The eggs from Jill Rees birds tend to be lighter in color as the hen progresses through her laying cycle. I like the darker blue of the 2014 birds so will always keep them in the flock! These are an "auto-sexing" breed, male chicks will usually be paler and always have a distinctive yellow splash on the head and females are darker and always with distinct dark eye stripes, brown head. (Above) Our Legbars started with eggs from several breeders. I was unhappy with the type and quality so we went to the source, Greenfire Farms in 2013. The birds were beautiful, grew into wonderful layers and great dispositions! When they imported the Jill Rees line of Crested Cream Legbars of course I had to have those also, so were purchased fall of 2014 and more 2015! All my birds have pronounced "crests" on the head. The difference between the lines is subtle but I now have pens of both varieties! The new line is lighter gray with less red, and even the hens mostly have a bit grayer contrast to them! Both lay about the same so far, beautiful blue eggs and lots of them! Pictured right and below to see some of the difference in the 2 lines, the more rust/red roo is the old line from 2013/14, the lighter gray is the new Jill Rees line (2015), they were not happy about being put together for pics! Another shot of the same two roos taking a good look at each other! Notice the roo on the right is more gray with less rust/red coloring. That is the new Jill Rees Silver line.
