About the architectural iron and steel and it's application in the construction of Buildings. Here are some examples of images found in this CD:  <>   230 pages in PDF file format. Architectural Iron and Steel and Its application in The Construction of Buildings by William H Birkmire (original author) This is a great old tome full of illustrations and pithy advice on how to make best use of architectural iron and steel to make elegant and enjoyable architectural environments and at the same time meet good structural standards for building design. A great tome, with just enough engineering education - and tables to be actually useful from the engineering standpoint, but with enough design and architectural insights to be a good designers tool and reference as well. Original Published in 1891 Original out of copyright due to being published prior to 1923 (US CODE) Restored version offered here Copyright 2011 Gnosis International Inc. Offered here by authority of Gnosis International Inc. While most of the initial chapters are in fact, engineering education and handbook of great depth and insight, all of the engineering education and handbook presentation is of good solid rational form, without undue mathematics, pretension, or unneeded complexity. This is a solid "how to get the job done" book. Middle sections of the book give us great idea for how to make everything from elevator doors to spiral staircases and decorations for architecture. The later section provides us with the tables and references to make it possible for us to use this as our sole source handbook to get the job done. Even if you are a working engineer with CAD tools, you are going to want this tome if you work with iron and steel or historical structures or restorations. If you are an architect or student, you will love it for the down to earth engineering and design instruction. If a historian, for the great illustrations and explanations of the evolving design and engineering. Content: Preface This work is intended for architects, architectural students and builders. The author has been induced to prepare it because of his inability to find, among the many excellent works on the Mathematics of construction, one that could be readily adapted as a reference book, treating of the various details of iron and steel as applied in the construction and finishing of buildings. It is considered advisable to give but general information on the manufacture of iron in the first chapter, to serve as an introduction to the chapters on construction which immediately follow, and to give in these chapters such simple formulas and complete tables as would readily enable one to calculate the strength of beams, girders, etc, subject to a transverse strain and of vertical supports subject to compression. Chapter I The Manufacture of Iron. Iron, Smelting, Pig Iron. Wrought Iron.
