500 mm face diameter = 19.7" Near perfect condition; one small scratch on the table surface from a small item that fell on it. (see last photo to the left and above the quarter) The dirty looking surface is a protective coating with a bit of dust in it. I have owned this for many years, as the second owner. At the time, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to own such a pristine unit, made by a world class company, but having 11 tilting rotary tables in our shop, from 4" to 36", we just never quite had to use "the virgin Hofmann 20 inch unit". I shut that facility down three years ago, and am carefully considering which items I will actually use as I go forward with a much smaller shop. While conceivable that I will need this size again, it seems doubtful, and I'm now ready to recoup my original investment. The story: At the time of purchase, the importer for Hofmann was a personal friend of mine. He has since passed away. Dieter Hoeschle originally sold this unit to an aerospace company and remembered showing them how to best design the fixtures to make their required measurements. It was not purchased for machining at all; only ultra precision measurements. He was both surprised and delighted when I told him that I now owned it. He then ordered a set of the factory internal drawings for me from Germany, in case I pursued modifying this unit for CNC use. That day never came as we acquired other options for our 5 axis machining needs, and now I have had this gem of a tilting rotary for over 20 years without ever mounting it on a machine in our shop either! The Accuracy: Resolution on the dial is 1 arc second, but this is not truly accuracy. High resolution does aid repeatability however. Since the original application was purely for metrology, they purchased the highest accuracy that Hofmann offered in this size. It's rated accuracy when it left the factory was +/- 5 arc seconds. In Dieter's experience, the actual accuracy of such a model when it left Hofmann's inspection department was +/- 3 arc seconds. Whatever the actual accuracy, it should still be essentially the same as when it was manufactured, since it has never experienced cutting loads of actual machining. The Price: Originally in 1982 this unit sold for $43,500 USD. Currently, replacement value is well in excess of $50,000 USD, and probably over $60K. However, as the manufacturing world has marched steadily toward "all things CNC", and I have no certifications to prove it's current accuracy, I'm offering this unit for $5,500.
