I have owned this for many years, as the second owner. I purchased this unit to convert into a large heavy duty telescope mount.  If it doesn't sell for this reasonable price, it may still happen, but I really have too many projects, and need to pare down my inventory of "nifty future toys". The story: Originally this was purchase new by Los Alamos National Laboratory.  I purchased it at their auction many years ago.  Their equipment maintenance program is extraordinary, and we found the lubricants to be clean and full.  I was located nearby and routinely did machining for "The Lab".  By fabricating only a fork and declination bearings, this would make a fine equatorial mount for large Newtonion reflector.  Internal gearing is 840:1.  Having downsized my business considerably, and moved out of state, I see little chance of ever using this for machining, and frankly, I have several other large telescope mount options already. Motor Drive: Internal GE 3 Phase motor is driven by a Toshiba inverter that allows operation from 220V single phase power (under 5 amps), with variable speed from .02 to 2.0 RPM at 60 Hz.  With minor reprogramming of the inverter 4 RPM is easily achievable.  It may also be possible to replace the GE motor internally with a servo motor to allow CNC control of rotary motion.  Externally mounting the servo motor is definitely possible if your motor will not fit internally.  The steel box provides a bit of "shop hardening" for the inverter and a small panel to mount the forward / reverse switch as you see it.  There is no need for an operator to go into the inverter's parameters in normal vari-speed and forward/reverse operation. Other uses: This unit could also be used as a tiltable welding rotator like a Rotab, though it is much more precision made.  The wooden base allows it be be easily maneuvered in your shop with merely a pallet jack as needed for various welding/positioning tasks.  I will add to this base to make a crate to protect this when being shipped to you. Accuracy: I don't know the actual accuracy, but the divisions read to 2 arc seconds and are large enough to position to smaller than 1 second increments on rotation. The Price: Originally this unit was part of a Pratt & Whitney 5 axis positioning NC machine with the tilt and the rotation manually controlled, therefore, it had no price by itself. In today's dollars, it would easily be $80K+, but it would also have a servo motor on both axes. As the manufacturing world has marched steadily toward "all things CNC", I'm offering this unit for $4,500 and hoping for a quick sale as this is less than half of the comparable other listings that I see on eBay.  Trades or partial trades may be considered. To discuss, reach me at S/N_509_701_7044cell.  (7am-9pm Pacific Time, please) Shipping: We get astoundingly great shipping rates on items requiring truck shipment, and will be happy to get a quote for you. Please provide zip code, residential versus commercial address, and whether or not you need lift gate service to your door. Unit weight is about 1350 pounds, but shipping weight will be 1450 pounds. Sincerely, Robb Sparks
