Note to ebay: This is not a hazardous material. These are pebbles, small rocks, not unlike those pesky ones that get stuck in your shoe and bug you for like five hours until you finally give in and go through the ordeal of removing it. This item is shipped in compliance with USPS Publication 52, and is a natural mineral specimen, as it is clearly defined in 49 CFR 173.426. EVERYTHING is radioactive... I prefer to quantify the level and let the customer decide. THE ITEM: This is a specimen of highly dense, diverse uraninite with multiple veins of uranium oxide pitchblende twisted through the specimen. There is other significant content of both stable and radioactive isotopes, and this specimen is very, very active. The alpha and low energy beta are the major players in this high count. Lots of radium in this sample. The alpha; which is the vast majority of radiation coming from uranium, is self-shielded because only the radiation from the very surface is measurable. Chunks and pebbles have a higher count rate because more of the surface area is exposed and detectable. Alpha and low energy beta make this unsuitable for staring at while holding it 4 inches from your eyes. Alpha particles can't go more than several inches, so even keeping it one foot out makes all the difference. Pancake probe: 410,000 CPM Bicron SWGM, LND-725 probe: 20,000 CPM beta shield closed, 123,000 open. 190mR/hour is what the meter face shows, although that is supposed to be for gamma only. Technically it is correct, making the surface dose 190mR/hour at the hottest spot. This is in roentgens, not absorbed or equivalent dose. CDV 700: Maxed it out on 100X with the window open, and is just below max with the window closed. Continuous particle monitor 8 feet away was at about twice background, half the alarm trip rate. It's a very spunky specimen! This will not be easy to ship, but that is my concern. It's kind of an artisanal process. I will come in a box larger than you would expect. If I determine a lead pig is needed for shipping, I will cover that cost. International customers are responsible for determining and paying import fees; I do not know anything about which countries charge what. It's not ok to tell me that your country prohibits importation when it really does. Items will not be undervalued or declared as gifts. Be good to each other. If I make a mistake, I will make it right. Please take time to know and understand your equipment before using this item as a means of testing. Thanks, and please feel free to ask any questions! Enjoy!
