Mushroom board is a type of reclaimed material often re-used for siding which was originally used in mushroom houses. It is a cypress or hemlock wood that has a unique grain and look due to the process which created it. "Mushroom boards" were the bedding boards in mushroom "blackout greenhouses." As the mushrooms grew, they released enzymes which ate into the softer part of the wood, or earlywood. As this layer gets eaten away, the darker denser latewood is revealed and what's left is similar to a topography map with beautiful texture. Because mushroom board was originally used for interior applications, it has a more consistent look and color than barn siding.
