ATOMSPECTRA research group presents ATOM SIMPLE – radiometer-dosimeter for smartphones and tablet PCs. Operating instructions. 1. Overview. Atom Simple is a radiometer-dosimeter constructed to work together with smartphones or tablets. Atom Simple is made for radiation monitoring of land, buildings, vehicles, construction materials, etc. You can use Atom Simple for beta, gamma and X-ray registration in physical experiments and for educational purposes. Atom Simple contains a radiation sensor (Geiger tube) and all electronics needed to power and get readings from it. Tiny plastic housing protects Geiger tube and electronics. Smartphone or tablet PC is used to process information gathered from radiation sensor and show readings on screen. Application for run with Atom Simple can be downloaded in AppStore (for iOS) using this link or in Google Play (for Android) using this link. Atom Simple don't contain hazardous or radioactive substances, use of Atom Simple is safe for people, animals and environment. Technical specifications. Please make sure that your Atom Simple is not physically damaged before measurement. Note that Atom Simple is not hermetically sealed, so keep it away from rain and moisture. If water or moisture got inside Atom Simple please stop measurements, disconnect coiled audio cord and let it get dry. Don't use solvents to clean Atom Simple, wipe it with soft cloth if needed. Don't try to repair Atom Simple, return it to manufacturer for service if needed. Unauthorized repairs will void the warranty. Atom Simple connection and radiation measurement. Set volume control of your smartphone to maximum, disable any volume limiting in settings if needed. Plug coiled connection cord into Atom Simple first, then into your smartphone or tablet PC. Run the application. After short calibration period (2-15 s) your setup is ready for measurements. Work modes. Your Atom Simple can work in two main modes: search mode and measurement mode. Toggling of these modes can be done by pressing button on screen. Search mode. In search mode reaction to radiation dose rate change is fast in expense of measurement accuracy. You can select between “Fast”, “Balanced” and “Accurate” search modes in application settings according to your needs. In search mode data from the sensor is analyzed using sliding window method, time to first reading is less than 1 minute in “Balanced” search mode under normal radiation background (0,1 uSv/h or 10 uR/h). After first reading indicated it will be updated every second or faster. Search mode is recommended for checking of land, vehicles, construction materials etc. Mesurement mode. In measurement mode Atom Simple gathers information from the sensor all the time until manual reset button will be pressed and indicates current statistical error which decreases with measurement time. You can start new measurement any time by pressing “Reset” button on the screen. Measurement mode is suitable for detecting very low activity sources by comparison two dose rates: background dose rate and dose rate close to possible source of radiation. Don't move your Atom Simple to get most accurate readings. Please note that statistical accuracy increases by square root law: you need to make four times longer measurement to get twice accurate result. Settings. The application lets you choose between measurement units, set dose rate and accumulated dose alarm level and many other parameters. We work on improvement of our applications, new features are added regularly. Please keep application up to date. After measurement. After work close the application and disconnect Atom Simple from your smartphone or tablet PC. Keep Atom Simple in dry place, away from sources of heat. Use original packaging for long-term storage and transportation. Limited warranty. The manufacturer guarantees Atom Simple to be free of factory defects in materials or workmanship. Warranty period is one year from the date of purchase. Physical damages and damages caused by water are subject to void the warranty. Coiled cord is not covered by warranty. Manufacturer don't guarantee compatibility with every smartphones and tablet PCs. If your Atom Simple needs repairs please return it to the manufacturer for servicing.
