Nosestat Nosestat® - solutio Against nosematosis in bees without antibiotic Nosestat is a veterinary medicinal product for the treatment and prophylaxis of the nosematosis with proved efficacy from 89% to 94 against Nosema apis and up to 74% against Nosema ceranae. The active substances iodine and formic acid have certain antiprotozoal effect. They destroy the Nosema parasites and their spores by oral administration with the curative sugar syrup or curative honey-sugar dough. Nozestat - solutio Nozestat-solutio is a veterinary medicinal product for treatment and prophylaxis of nosematosis in bees. It contains iodum 4.0 g, acidum formicicum 5.0 g, glicerinum, kali iodidum et tincture mentae ad 100 ml. Its chemical, parasitological and clinical features are described by K. Gurgulova, Assoc. Prof., PhD, Iv. Zhelyazkova, Assoc. Prof., PhD, R Bulgaria and A. Thrasyoulou, Prof., R Greece. The substances of Nozestat having an active effect are the iodine and the formic acid. No changes in its composition occur after mixing the active ingredients as a solution and putting them as food for bees /sugar syrup or sugar dough/. Formic acid acts on the causers of nosematosis based on its antiseptic, cytotoxic and disinfection properties. Its effect is also due to the oxidation and curdling of the proteins of the causer of nosematosis and its spores. Formic acid is easy to oxidize and it dissociates to СО2and H2O. The effect of the hydrogen ions liberated in the dissociating of the formic acid is related to a penetration through the cell membrane and into the spores, which cause nosematosis, and thus their destruction occurs. The quantities taken internally by the bee have a contact effect on the spores located in the alimentary canal. The sanitization of the alimentary canal of the bee interrupts the cycle of dissemination of the parasitic invasion through the social contact among the bees. Thus, the room of the hive and the honey-combs are indirectly disinfected from nosematosis. The iodine connects to the hydrogen from the water liberating atomic oxygen, which acts on the causers of nosematosis in bees. The oxidative effect of the iodine is manifested in the alimentary canal of the bees by destroying the spores and the causer of nosematosis through its antiseptic and disinfection effect. Nozestat acts on the epithelial cells of the wall of the middle intestine of the bee where the intracellular parasites Nozema apis and Nozema cerenae parasitize. The effect is efficient and manifested in a short period of time. Sanitization of the alimentary tract from the nosema spores is achieved and the chain of disease dissemination is interrupted. Nozestat is distinguished for its good tolerance and lack of changes in the life and activity of the bee family when used in the doses prescribed. It is applied in the spring and in the autumn against nosematosis in adult bees . Nozestat kills the causer in the bees and diminishes their affection. The measures to fight nosematosis include also disinfection, sanitization, narrowing and warming of the bee families. The application of Nozestat is made internally with a nourishing sugar syrup or sugar-honey dough. The application of Nozestat-solutio is made not later than 7 days from the beginning of the honey collection. Nozestat-solutio is not to be applied during the honey collection. The product Nozestat-solutio of Primavet – Sofia, R Bulgaria, registered with a license for use, was the only one of the registered veterinary medicinal products for the countries of the European Union until the year of 2010.
