Review: Written at the time when steam engine and rail and the industrial revolution were in full acceleration, this book is full of a mix of history, designs, reflections on the economics of the art and science of technology of the times. with terms both quaint and useful - such as "fructification" and such - it is both educational and enjoyable read. For those who are historians it has components that are useful documentation of costs and economics and methods of the day. For those who are artists, designers, architects, and others who envision - it has tons of wonderful drawings. For those who want to know and learn metals and technology for manipulating and creating smithing art, there is adequate basic instruction in iron and metallurgy to tools of the time. This one does not act as a general or basic blacksmithing guide nor tell you in detail how to make each design. Though hundreds of designs are shown. Methods of joining and bending and such are discussed as they related to design issues. It is assumed the reader is already basically a smithy or is more interested in the base knowledge, economics, methods, tools, and most importantly, the designs. Great book for designs. Many of these designs are intricate, world class and classic and are not first projects for your freshly installed workshop and anvil. Enjoy this one. I learned a lot about designs, methods ... Love it! have to admit I am more than a little humbled at even thinking about tacking some of the more intricate designs. SO whether you are a historian, smithy, or artist or architect, you can learn a gaggle from this. Enjoy ! Presented in easy to view PDF file format.
