Until it vanished by being sold to Caterpillar for $8.8 billion in July 2011, Bucyrus-Erie had more experience in the manufacture of excavating machinery than any other concern in the world. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Bucyrus supplied 77 of the 102 steam shovels used to dig the Panama Canal. In 1927, Bucyrus merged with the Erie Steam Shovel Company to form Bucyrus-Erie. The Bucyrus 20-B full-revolving steam shovel on mechanized tracks, was introduced in 1922. It’s bucket gulped a modest .75 cubic yard, but there were a lot of customer who did not have canals to dig, and the 20-B was a solid success. It was used for digging in quarries, building roads, trenching and lifting. They were available as cable shovels, cable hoes, draglines and cranes as both crawler mounted machines and "Transit Machines" which were truck mounted. Please note that this is a photoduplicated reproduction, not an original . The accompanying images were scanned from a reprint, not the original.
