Artist Statement - Zaina Quraishi - June 2015   This helmet project was very dear to me as the inspiration that led me to the design that I ended up doing on the helmet was on the idea of getting people out of poverty. One day I hope to make my own charitable organization and do my part in helping people attain a better life. This idea of creating a bridge between developing nations and developed nations is what led to the design on my helmet. Moreover, if you look closer the developing island has the shape as that of the silhouette of a woman, while the developed island is the silhouette of a man. This was also made to be this way because we are still in a world where women are not equal to men and the bridge was not only a message for poverty but also for the sexism that our world has to overcome.   The way that I designed the helmet has to do a lot with three- dimensional architecture. The helmet having two larger sides worked to my advantage as it was perfect to place my two islands on either side and the top arch of the helmet was a good fit for the bridge. Moreover, I used the front part of the helmet to create the sign, which said, "Creating bridges out of poverty". It summarizes the whole idea I was trying to portray. I used the lower side bumps as construction signs and the rim of the helmet to make a black and yellow construction tape. I worked with various media so that I could create a more layered and fascinating look because sometimes working with just one medium can get boring and look a little dull. I ended up using 3 different media. I used pencil crayons for the little pieces in my island, markers for the construction signs and various other detail and outlines and acrylic paint for the water because I believe that paint delivers a more flowy and sophisticated look which is what I wanted the water to look like. I also used materials like cardboard to construct the bridge, so that I could have a 3-D factor in my helmet, which would give it more interesting composition.   This idea related to me because as I mentioned in the first paragraph, I myself want to create a charity organization when I am capable of doing so. This is why the idea that I had incorporated in this helmet of building a bridge to get people out of poverty, greatly relates to me and a future goal that I have set for myself. I tried my best on the helmet and put all of my skills and effort into it so that the helmet would convey the message that I intended on portraying through this design. I even tweaked and repaired many parts of the helmet based off my teacher's constructive criticism because I am a person who wants to do better if possible. I am very happy and proud with my finished work, as I did a lot of work on it and tried to do what is in the best of my ability.
