Artist Statement - Aman Dhanjal - June 2015   My artwork portrays a critical view of various social, economical and cultural issues. I combined urban and modern societies together to focus on the various architectural styles and their foundations. Having engaged subjects as diverse as the different issues and architecture, my work reproduces familiar visual signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces.   My piece is divided into two parts, first being the urban community and other second being the rural community. I used 3D modeling around the construction hat to give out an important message of safety. The 3D model is basically divided into two different roads: a concrete road with streetlights and mud road with fences. In 1800s, people used to put fence around their houses to keep them safe, which is what we need in some parts of communities. I tried to create a contrast between the architectural styles and the concept of safety.   The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work. I used orange sticks and metallic wire to make the streetlights and the fence. First, I sanded the whole hat to get the type of texture I wanted then, I mixed burnt sienna and white to make the base coat of the hard hat. I also used a black marker to do the little details. And I used the metallic duct tape in some places to make the hat stand out more.   I learned a lot of things during the process of this project. First, I learned the proper use acrylic paint. I never painted on a 3D surface before thus this was my first time painting on it and it was actually a great experience. Lastly, I now feel more confident to paint with acrylic on any surface because of this project. Next year I hope to attend George Brown College for Practical nursing.
