Delta Education 162-1368 Sling Psychrometer Humidity Detector (Pack of 30) Item Description The Delta Education 162-1368 Sling Psychrometer Humidity Detector is two thermometers for grades 5-8 to measure the water vapor content or relative humidity of the atmosphere by means of a sling, and includes a wet-bulb thermometer, a dry-bulb thermometer, a black shoelace lanyard, felted cotton fabric, rubber band, and instructions. The felted cotton fabric attaches over the bulb of one thermometer with the rubber band and is then wetted to create the wet-bulb thermometer. The shoelace lanyard threads through the holes in the top of the thermometers. Ventilation is provided by whirling the thermometers at the end of the lanyard. Psychrometric tables in the instructions list humidity variables, such as relative humidity, according to dry-bulb temperature and wet-bulb depression at equilibrium. The thermometers are dual scale and are 5 inches high. Psychrometers are instruments consisting of two thermometers used to measure the moisture content of air or other gases. When the cloth of the wet-bulb thermometer is soaked and the two thermometers are ventilated, the wet-bulb temperature is lower than the dry-bulb temperature because of cooling due to the evaporation of water from the cloth. The drier the air, the greater the evaporation, and the more the wet-bulb temperature is depressed.
