The geiger counter does not contain any radioactive material itself. The DX-1 and DX-2 units are very sensitive and detect background or cosmic radiation; again approximately one click per 2-3 seconds is normal. Of course, in the presence of detectable ionizing radiation, the frequency of the clicking will increase. Alpha Radiation: Our units are sensitive to Beta, Gamma and XRay. Our units are NOT sensitive to Alpha particles! You can look up materials (e.g. Thorium, Tungsten, Uranium, etc.) on Wikipedia to find out what type of particle is emitted. If you know the element or make-up of the material you are testing, look it up! Many isotopes emit only one kind of particle. Make note of the type of particle emitted by the material you are testing if at all possible before drawing conclusions. If an element or isotope of an element is an alpha emitter, the unit may register an elevated reading but no claims are made re. alpha detection. It should be remembered that Alpha particles are a highly ionizing form of particle radiation, and have low penetration depth. They are able to be stopped by a few centimeters of air, or by the skin or even a piece of paper. When in doubt, search the web!
