I was trying to find a lithium battery charger that can charge battery with a current of 500 mA. Chargers I found are nice in some way, but I didn't like a couple of things. Here are some disadvantages about the chargers I have found: The LED indicators don't fully show what is really happening. Usually it is just "Power" and "Charging" LEDs. No indication of "Charged". And the only way you can think that is charged is when "Charging" indicator is off. That is not really nice. Designers use charger IC in the package that can't give 500mA current, because it overheats. It usually gives about 350 - 400 mA. The battery connector is not compatible with all of the batteries. If battery has incompatible connector then I need to solder wires, which is not practical. As you maybe already know, the most popular IC found in these modules is MCP73831. It is very nice, but people tend to misuse it a little bit. Here are my solutions to the problems: The disadvantage with LED indicators can be very simply eliminated with a couple of resistors. The IC overheating won't happen again if you use it in DFN package, instead of SOT23 package. Instead of connector, screw terminals can be used. Eventually, after making several prototypes, I came up with lithium battery charger that is very pleasant to use. I also breakouted USB connector and battery terminals to pins. It may also be used with prototyping breadboard.
