Lufkin 140,  5" Toolmaker's Dividers, one pair in a box that originally held two.  Box has original label, otherwise the box is soiled and worn.   The dividers are "Yankee" style spring top dividers with screw adjustment and a thumb hold...possibly from the 1915 era.  On one arm it reads "The Lufkin Rule Co. Saginaw, Mich., Made in U.S.A."  The legs and points of the dividers, below the adjustment screw, are in fine condition.  The adjustment screw threads/nut and the thumb hold had some surface rust.  There was some corrosion and staining on smooth metal surfaces, but no pitting.   A previous owner has etched his initials into the round spring at the top of the dividers.   The movements of the toolmaker's dividers are completely functional. The Yankee spring pattern divider is most commonly used to make circles, find centers of circles, find centers of broken bolts, divide distances into equal spaces, and other such operations. The points are hardened with sharpness, so the dividers are laid down as flat as possible when setting the adjustment screw to scale dimensions. This saves the points, and greater accuracy is possible.  All parts are intact and adjust or move freely.  The dividers were an estate purchase within the tool chest of a master machinist. These toolmaker's dividers are capable of being used right away in production setup, or as another exhibit in your vintage machinist tool collection.  Either way check out the pictures and make your own assessment of its condition, then bid to win.   Remember you got to be a bidder to be the buyer!
