Since it is a one part system and 100% solids, it offers many advantages in bonding where the adhesive can be exposed to UV light. The use of NOA 61 eliminates premixing, drying or heat curing operations common to other adhesive systems. Curing time is remarkably fast, and is dependent upon the thickness applied and the amount of ultraviolet light energy available. Norland 61 meets Federal Specification MIL-A-3920 for optical adhesives and is approved for use on all government contracts specifying such adhesives. The adhesive is designed to give the best possible optical bond to glass surfaces, metals, fiberglass and glass filled plastics. NOA61 is recommended for bonding lenses, prisms and mirrors for military, aerospace and commercial optics as well as for terminating and splicing optical fibers. Norland 61 also has excellent clarity, low shrinkage and as light flexibility that make it superior to other materials for optical bonding. These characteristics are important in order for the user to produce high quality optics and achieve long term performance under changing environments. Norland 61 is cured by ultraviolet light with maximum absorption within the range of 320-380 nanometers with peak sensitivity around 365nm. The recommended energy required for full cure is 3 Joules/sq. cm in these wavelengths. The cure is not inhibited by oxygen, hence any areas in contact with air will cure to a non-tacky state when exposed to ultraviolet light. It will cure well in direct sunlight in as little as a few hrs or a day or two depending on item being glued and sun/UV light penetration. This adhesive is simply the best thing out there for what it does but it is expensive. We use it in manufacturing gun sights and only use a tiny drop on each gun sight. I have decided to offer it here for anyone who needs a smaller amount but does not want to pay the full price to buy a larger bottle from Norland. This adhesive is used by companies who manufacture military grade gun sights, fighter jet level sighting and optics and top automotive manufactures such as Mercedes Benz. It cures crystal clear and rock hard and can even be polished after it fully cures. It can be used on jewelry to mount or remount precious stones such as diamonds, it cures hard, strong and perfectly clear so it is almost undetectable. It can also be used to cast small items, you can pour it, expose it to UV light for 10 seconds causing it to gel, then pop it out of the mold. Then expose it to direct UV light causing it to cure rock hard in minutes for an almost instant small clear casting. We make small clear and colored inserts for gun sights using this exact method using a 2 part clear silicon mold. It can be soft cured for 10 to 20 seconds to gel it, then have an item inserted, with plenty of time to position your item, then exposed to strong UV light and cured to a rock hard state almost instantly making for some extremely interesting possibilities in usage. The Norland 61 we have for sale is new, fresh stock and is repackaged in small vials that are designed for lab work such as DNA storage etc, they have screw on caps with a o-ring seal so these vials are super for storing this adhesive, it does need to be stored in a cool dry location and out of direct sun light or strong artificial light.
