According to an online source, although the IM-156/PD can detect alphas, betas, and gamma rays, its response is solely calibrated for gamma rays. When the window is uncovered, the device can detect alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays. When the beta shield is in place (it serves to block alpha particles), the IM-156/PD can only detect beta particles and gamma rays. In contrast, when the gamma shield is utilized (it blocks beta particles), the device responds solely to gamma rays. Technical Associates, based in Burbank, California, produces the Radiac Meter IM-156/PD. This device is currently available and appears to be in excellent cosmetic condition, with only minor scratches and scuffs. However, we have no documentation regarding the product and have not had the opportunity to test it. What makes this device especially intriguing is its unique mechanism, which permits the shielding windows to move over the detector. It is believed that this device utilizes an ionization chamber and not a Geiger-Muller tube. It is worth noting that one case screw is absent. This product is quite unusual and is the only one of its type that we have ever encountered.
