This screw falls into the category of self-tapping screws and is one of two types: thread cutting or thread rolling screws. Both types create a mating thread in the wall of a hole, but they differ in the way they create the thread. Thread cutting screws cut the wall of the hole to create the thread, which means they create material chips that need to be cleared away from the hole to prevent clogging. Thread rolling screws, also known as thread forming screws, do not remove material but rather press against the wall of the hole to displace the material and form the threads.
