Hello Ebay Fans, In my normal life I teach science, and one of my courses in called Energy Resources. In this class I show my students how electricity is generated by rotating magnets near coils of copper wire. What you are looking at in these pictures is a “Transformation of Energy Apparatus” that I designed and built from scratch. It is a single-phase generator, and demonstrates how energy is transformed from a cranking motion into electricity, and then into light, sound and motion. This was a labor of love. I built it more for me than anyone else. Electricity generators normally hide the copper coils and magnets behind thick steel. I wanted to show people how the copper coils and magnets are situated with respect to each other inside a generator. That’s why I used clear acrylic as the housing and mounting frame. With clear acrylic, you can see exactly how the generator is constructed. After creating the ten spools from scratch, I hand-wound each of them with 18 gauge magnet wire. Each coil has 150 winds of copper. After winding and mounting, I soldered all the coils together to make a completely connected series of coils. The magnets (like the spools, there are ten total), are made out of rare-earth neodymium. If you’ve ever used these kinds of magnets, you know they are incredibly powerful. Neodymium magnets are the best kind for generators because they have such excellent power and can therefore move many more electrons through the copper coils than standard ceramic-ferrite magnets. Since higher voltage is achieved with a faster spin, I geared the generator using a large flywheel that you crank. The flywheel is mounted on a steel Lazy-Susan, so it’s really tough and dopes not wiggle. A drive belt spins the magnets—the faster you crank, the faster the magnets spin. The generator creates 5-7 volts of alternating current electricity with moderate spinning. The alternating current is rectified—thereby turning it into direct current—using an oversized bridge rectifier (I chose a really large bridge rectifier so people could see how the change to direct current happens). Electricity flows where you want it by closing circuits with knife switches. The first circuit (from the left) measures how much voltage you are generating. The analog dial moves according to how fast you spin the magnets. The second circuit measures amperage (this is the number of electrons moving through the circuit, and like voltage, the amperage varies according to how fast you spin the magnets). Three light bulbs are next. It’s easy to illuminate only one light bulb because it draws very little power. As you close the knife switches and illuminate the second, and the third, however, the cranking becomes noticeably harder because the bulbs draw more power. The fourth circuit is a bell, which transforms the generated electricity into sound. The faster you spin the magnets, the faster the bell ringer hits the bell (and the noisier it becomes). The fifth circuit is an electric motor with a small bar of aluminum attached to its spinning shaft (allowing you to see the how fast the motor is spinning). Like the other circuits, the faster you spin the magnets, the faster the electric motor spins. Finally, the sixth circuit is an electrolysis demonstration container where water splits into hydrogen and oxygen. This container is filled with a water and weak acid solution. When cranking the generator, one test tube collects the hydrogen and another collects the oxygen. You can see this happening as very tiny bubble form at the electrode ends. The test tubes, solution, and instructions from a science supply firm are all included in this sale, so you can perform electrolysis right when you receive the machine. The entire Transformation of Energy Apparatus is made of solid oak, so it’s really tough. I also put four rubber gripping feet on the bottom, so the machine can’t slide on a table, nor mark it up with scratches. Like I said, I built this more for me, so I made it a perfectly as I could.
