Offered: Vintage Chandler & Price "Common Screw" Letterpress Composing Stick. Stick is one of the longest lengths composing stick offered by most manufactures at 20" length and 2" width. Stick is most likely 100+ years old and is in excellent working condition. Stick has no rust, dings, warped or bent edges on either bed or rail. No past owner id markings. Past owner drilled a hole in bed at foot to have a place to hang stick. (This was a fairly common practice on older composing sticks, prior to later manufactures designing sticks with a pre-designated hole.) This is an excellent choice for owners of Proof Presses (Vandercook, Challenge, Show Card to name a few) as well as larger format letterpress presses. Setting a long line of type for a Broadside /Poster was never easier. Since the width of this stick is 2", a 12 line wood type offering would easily be set into this stick and transferred to composing stone or press bed without breaking a sweat. Research on the "Common Screw" composing stick produced the following, article written by Fred Williams Editor & Publisher of TYPE & PRESS. The article "The Lore of the Composing Stick" Spring issue 1987 revealed the following: "Common Screw - One of the oldest types of composing sticks, it was originally made of wood and later fabricated of iron or steel. Different methods were used to anchor the knee. The rail was often pierced by holes, slots or notches at pica or nonpareil (6-point) intervals or slotted its full length to allow the insertion of a screw & bolt to allow adjustment. Usually ungraduated, this type of stick was made by many firms." Stick has the following stamped into base of stick: CHANDLER & PRICE CO. CLEVELAND, OHIO B Stick is 100% in good usable condition. Knee and associated hardware are in remarkably good condition (no stripped threads on nut or bolt) slotted bolt also is not damaged and ridges on bolt edges are still well defined and easy to tighten knee with finger tips.
