Mining Helmet / Hard Hat - Full Brim Vintage White & Blue  This hat is believed to pre-date the 1940s because in 1938 aluminum hats were the standard.  I contacted a few museums and they have offered some explanations on this hat: 585 is the employee number. The company was either very big (has 585+ miners), or the 5 is the level of the mine, and 85 is the employee number. Each miner had his own number which would be on a tag at the portal. When he went underground he took the tag with him and hung it back on the board when he came out.  That way they knew who was underground at any one time.   However, one curator mentioned that because there are no lighting clips, this could be an open pit mine or gravel pit.  I was told that JGS may be the initials of the employee or union, but I believe that these are the initial of the company. It is hard to see, but there is a scribbled "SI" under the brim which I believe belongs to the individual.  The colour choice is unique, so this hat was custom made.  No manufacture tags. This hat probably saved its owners life several times as it has several dings.  ---- If a US Buyer Sells this, I will most likely drive to the border and mail through USPS to save some money. It won't matter to you because shipping is free, and shipping duration will be the same.
